Changing the way we teach upper primary science: writing interactive stories for science on the IWB

Download: To download this resource click here (Box.net)

This presentation was presented by Dr Christine Redman and Dr Anthony Jones at the Fifth National IWB Conference in 2008.

Description: Recent reports on Australian students’ performance in reading, science and mathematics on the OECD's Program for International Student Assessment 2006 (PISA) suggest a downward trend. The aim in this session is to use findings from research by the presenters and others, to assist in an exploration of collaborative writing about science using affordances of the IWB. While there are many different pieces of software that could be used for this task, in this session the 2Simple product 2Create will be employed.

Multiple- Intelligences and the Interactive Whiteboard

This presentation was presented by Damien Taylor at the Sixth National IWB Conference in 2009.

Description: This session provides a ‘brainstorm’ introduction to linking multiple-intelligences to the use of an IWB in the classroom. The session will cause you to think of ways in which to engage maximum student participation whilst tapping into the variety of multiple-intelligences that students use to process their learning. Damien calls it the MULTI-TECH-MIX (nu-skool bonus remix included).

This presentation was presented by John Short at the Sixth National IWB Conference in 2009.

Description: “Come in – sit down – shut up – face the front – and everybody listen to me!”

It is an almost laughable ‘old-school’ teacher stereotype that we dismissed half a century ago. Teaching in those days was very ‘teacher centered’. But let’s be careful! In our race to introduce the interactive whiteboard we need to realize that we are bringing back to our classrooms a device that is essentially very teacher centered. The IWB does much in the way of promising engaged learners but unless we use it both thoughtfully and creatively our hope in its ability to transform a classroom is misplaced. Do we use them well? Sadly, too many IWBs are being used for little more than impotent data projection. Let’s get the pedagogy right! This session will expand your horizon to teaching and learning possibilities for the board.

An Action Learning Approach To Integrating Interactive Whiteboards In the Classroom

Download: To download this resource click here (Box.net)

This presentation was presented by Shanti Clements at the Sixth National IWB Conference in 2009.

Description: Virtual Constructionism is both a design framework and action learning process that guides teachers in the implementation and use of Interactive White Board (IWB) technologies in the classroom. Virtual Constructionism is a model of teaching and learning that draws from key pedagogies and digital learning technologies to enhance student engagement and quality learning outcomes. As part of this session, Shanti Clements will highlight the strategies needed to promote whole school professional learning, the development of action learning teams and the essential skills needed to design Interactive White Board (IWB) units.

This presentation was presented by Robyn Garden at the First NZ and AUS International IWB Conference in 2009.

Description: In this session, a variety of strategies will be demonstrated that enhance the learning of students. Strategies will be mainly, but not all, science based. However, they will be easily transferable to other curriculum areas. Strategies will be based on good pedagogical practice. The presentation will be on an ACTIVboard but the strategies are generally also easily transferable to other software.
